Located 13 miles or 21 km south of Downtown, California's San Francisco International Airport serves the Bay area, offering flights throughout North and South America, Asia and Europe. San Francisco Airport carries the international airport code of SFO (IATA), KSFO (ICAO) and SFO (FAA LID). It is close to San Bruno and Millbrea in San Mateo County. It is California's second busiest airport in terms of passenger numbers (after Los Angeles International Airport). SFO saw an increase of 3.5 percent in terms of air passenger transportation in 2018, handing a total of 57,783,313 passengers.
It takes ca. 30 minutes to reach Downtown thanks to Highway 101 and Interstate 280. The airport covers ca 5,207 acres or 21.07 square km and sits in an elevated location about 13 feet or 4 meters above sea level at 37º 37' 08” N and 122º 22' 30” W.

San Francisco International Airport serves as a hub for United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, and offers flights around the globe through other carriers like Aer Lingus, Aeromexico, Air Canada, Air China, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Alitalia, Emirates, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, KLM and Qantas.
San Francisco Airport has four runways and three domestic and one International terminal, divided into A and G areas.
Security in Terminals
It's not possible to meet arriving passengers at gates or at the curb. At Terminal 1 there are seating areas near the exits of Boarding Areas B (Gates 20-36) and C (Gates 40-48) and in Departures at Ticketing Level.
At Terminal 2 passengers can be met at the Meeting Point on Departures/Ticketing Level (near Boarding Area D), to which they should proceed after arriving at Boarding Area D (Gates 50-59).
Terminal 3 offers a Meeting Point on the Arrivals/Baggage Reclaim Level, between Baggage Carousels 3 and 4 to which passengers arriving at Boarding Area F (Gates 68-90) should proceed.
At the International Terminal in areas A and G passengers can be met at the US Customs and Immigration exit, in the Arrivals Level Lobby, where a signed Meeting Point is located.
San Francisco Airport Ground Transportation
SFO is linked to the city by the Bay Area Rapid Transit train system (BART), which gives direct rail access at terminals and ground transportation to Downtown San Francisco, Oakland and the East Bay area. BART station is situated on the Departures/Ticketing Level at the International Terminal. Within the airport passengers are transported via the AirTrain people mover system, which links terminals and parking lots, BART station and Rental Car Center.
Blue Line takes passengers with car rental reservations to the Center, where Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, National and Thrifty are located on the 4th Floor and Fox Rent A Car on the 1st Level.
