Car hire is handled in a separate building at San Francisco International Airport. The SFO Rental Car Center can be reached within 10 minutes (from the Main terminal) by taking the Blue Line of AirTrain, a free train service that links all terminals. Reservations can be made in advance at www.budget.com. Payment can be made in advance or at the rental station.

To rent a vehicle from Budget SFO renters must be at least 21 years of age. Drivers aged 21 to 24 pay a daily fee of $27.00 (price as of 2019) and are restricted to the type and size of the vehicle they can rent. Drivers aged 25 and over are not restricted and don't pay this fee. All rentals are delivered with a full tank and vehicles must be refueled, before they are returned to the rental station at San Francisco International Airport's Rental Car Center. Returns are handled on Level 3 of this building, as are pick-ups.

It's possible to arrange for pre-paid fuel options. If the vehicle is driven less than 75 miles, there will be a small refueling charge, normally less than $20.00, unless a fuel receipt is shown at the time of the rental return.
